Thousand Oaks: 'Mass shooting' reported at California bar - BBC
News
In this news report of the California bar shooting the clip is constructed to be very important and portrayed to be urgent. In the clip to news company uses a big sign to display "Breaking News" by doing this it automatically grabs the viewers attention making the view feel as though they need to be aware of this sudden news. The words "Breaking News " are also the only words on the screen therefore the news company are trying to show urgency. The new company further on in the report displays the words "California Shooting" the use of the verb "shooting" also constructs the report to show fear yet importance of alerting people.
BBC News also displays on the screen "Multiple injuries" the adjective "Multiple" shows that a lot of people have been affected. The use of this adjective further makes the viewer want to continue watching as they want to know if people are ok, if the gunman/woman has been captured.(Viewers will be thinking of many questions about the situation, therefore will continue watching in hope they they will be answered .)
Also, in the clip the BBC displays "Reports say at least thirty shots were fired" by doing this it automatically attracts the reader. For example if you were a view who just tuned into this channel you would want to continue watching to find out the natural answers which will be arising (Who?What?Where? Why?and How?)
The BBC also says that this crime is a "huge police operation" this use of dramatic language shows how horrible and big this news story is.
-"News Values" is the term we use to describe how important a news item is to the media.-
This clip at the time would have had high news value, this is due to the urgency, importance, immediacy, consequence, suspense, human interest and magnitude.(These are some of the key factor of big news values created by Louise Clara in 1992)The BBC also says that this crime is a "huge police operation" this use of dramatic language shows how horrible and big this news story is.
-"News Values" is the term we use to describe how important a news item is to the media.-
Consequence and human interest are huge parts to this story as twelve people where killed, this allows the reader to be involved emotionally, sympathizing with the people who where and are involved.
Also at the time of this event many people in the area of California will have especially been turning their devices on and watching the news to find out what is going and to see if people they personally know have been injured or effected.People also in the area of California will have been watching the news to make sure that the gun man has been captured so that they know that it is safe to leave their houses etc. Here is where we see the common factor of "Magnitude" come into play as the more people will watch the news story. Many people will also turn to the news channel for answers as throughout their day they will receive little pieces of information which don't full answers their questions therefore turning to the new channels to get the full story.
This story would have been broadcasted all over the word for example, this story was broadcasted in England showing that culturally England is on the same level as America.
This story also shows people especially Americans that this is what the gun law is doing in Americans. This news report also may intrigue more people (Americans especially) to join the process of banning citizens having access to guns.
Immediacy- News which is current/new.
Consequence- News which actually affects the reader.
Suspense-Information about things which have to be resolved such as a trail.
Human Interest -Stories which involve the readers emotionally.
Magnitude-Stories which shock due to the enormity of the event.
